Downtown Ocho Rios, St. Ann
Ocho Rios Fort is the small coastal fortification sitting at the western edge of the Ocho Rios town centre, facing the bay at the end of Main Street. Built by the British in the late 17th century to defend against Spanish and French raids on the north coast, the fort today is a restored ruin with two period cannons, a small plaque wall describing the fort's role in the Maroon Wars, and a sea-view platform over the harbour entrance. It takes about 30 minutes to walk the full site.
The fort is free to enter and is a useful half-hour stop for visitors assembling an Ocho Rios heritage circuit that includes Fern Gully, Shaw Park Gardens, and the Taino exhibits at Konoko. The interpretive signage is limited but the setting -- lawn, cannons, a direct view of the bay -- is pleasant and photogenic.
Drive time from OCJ is 20 minutes; from MBJ it is 2 hours. The Ochi Luxe Van handles the route. Ocho Rios Fort is typically combined with Island Village, the Craft Market, and a Dunn's River morning on a Quarter Day chauffeur at $450 for three hours in the right vehicle for your party. Compare tours and excursions for combined heritage days, and find a nearby stay for the Moon Palace or Sandals Ochi resorts within walking distance.
The fort runs best in the cool morning hours. There is no shade on the sea-view platform.
