The most important things to understand before you buy.
For trips with non-refundable bookings, international medical exposure, or adventure activities — yes. Domestic short trips with full-cancel hotels and your existing health insurance covering you abroad — probably not. Run the trip's worst-case cost through your head: if a $4,000 cancellation or a $20,000 emergency-room bill would hurt, get insurance.
The good plans cover emergency hospitalization, evacuation (e.g., medevac flights), prescription drugs while abroad, and ER visits for injury or illness that started during the trip. Pre-existing conditions are usually excluded unless you buy a specific add-on.
Travel/medical pays for things that happen DURING your trip (illness, injury, lost bags). Trip-cancellation pays for things that prevent the trip (you fall ill, a relative dies, your destination has a hurricane). Some plans bundle both; some sell them separately.
