Tabarka is a coastal town in the far northwest of Tunisia, near the border with Algeria, where the forested Kroumirie mountains meet the Mediterranean. It is one of the greenest corners of the country, sometimes called Tunisian Switzerland. The town is dominated by a Genoese fort standing on a rocky islet just offshore, a legacy of the Genoese Lomellini family who held a trading post here from the 16th to the 18th century, and by the coastal rock formations known as the Needles. Tabarka is famous for its red coral, harvested here for centuries, and for excellent diving, as well as for the long-running Tabarka Jazz Festival held in summer. Nearby, the mountain village of Ain Draham sits high in the Kroumirie forests. Tabarka is reached by road from Tunis, a few hours to the east, and by its own airport. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild, wetter winters.
