MIR is the airport code for Monastir, a coastal city in central Tunisia served by Habib Bourguiba International Airport. Monastir sits on a headland on the Mediterranean, wrapped around beaches and a marina, and is best known for its historic Ribat, one of the oldest and most impressive Islamic fortresses in North Africa, built in the 8th century to guard the coast. Beside it stands the grand mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, independent Tunisia's first president, who was born in the town. Monastir is a relaxed seaside resort with a medina and old town, and lies close to the larger resort city of Sousse and the holy city of Kairouan inland. The airport handles holiday flights from Europe as well as regional services. The climate is warm and Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, and the beaches are busiest in summer.
