Simbai is a remote settlement high in the mountains of Madang Province in Papua New Guinea, in the Middle Ramu district amid the rugged highlands near the Schrader Range. It is the home of the Kalam people, who are famous for their spectacular traditional dress, above all headdresses adorned with the iridescent green shells of thousands of beetles and the plumes of birds of paradise, celebrated at the local Kalam cultural festival. The area is extremely isolated, with no road or sea connection: Simbai is reached only by small aircraft landing on a grass airstrip or by long, demanding treks over the mountains. That remoteness has kept its culture strong and little changed. This is a destination for adventurous, culturally minded travelers, and any visit needs local arrangements and time. The climate is cool and wet, typical of the New Guinea highlands.
