AIE is the airport code for the airstrip at Aiome, a small settlement in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea, in the valley of the Ramu river, in the rugged interior of the north of the country. It lies in a remote region of forested mountains, valleys and rivers, in an area of scattered villages and traditional communities, far from the main towns and reached with difficulty. Aiome is a modest local and mission centre rather than a tourist destination, of interest for its remote setting among the ranges and rivers of the Papua New Guinea interior. Like many places in the country's highlands and river country, it depends on its airstrip as a lifeline, one of the few ways in other than long walks and river journeys. Aiome is reached by small aircraft to its airstrip and by rough tracks and rivers. The climate is hot, humid and very wet, with heavy rainfall for much of the year.
