Munbil is a remote settlement in the Sandaun, or West Sepik, Province of Papua New Guinea, in the far northwest of the country near the border with Indonesian Papua. It lies in rugged, forested country in one of the most isolated and least-developed parts of Papua New Guinea, an area of dense rainforest, mountains and rivers, home to traditional communities with distinctive languages and cultures. Munbil is a small mission and airstrip settlement rather than a tourist destination, with minimal services, of interest for its remoteness and cultures rather than any developed attractions. It is reached chiefly by light aircraft to a grass airstrip, weather permitting, and by demanding overland routes, so any visit needs careful local arrangements. The climate is hot, humid and very wet, with heavy rainfall for much of the year.
