Tifalmin is a remote valley and community in the far west of Papua New Guinea, in Sandaun, or West Sepik, Province, close to the border with Indonesian Papua. It lies in rugged country near Telefomin, on the northern side of the Star Mountains, one of the most isolated regions of the country. The Tifalmin are one of the Min peoples of this highland area, with a traditional culture of gardening, hunting and distinctive local languages, in a landscape of steep forested ridges, fast rivers and high rainfall. There are no roads linking this region to the outside world; access is by light aircraft to grass airstrips such as those around Telefomin, followed by walking. This is a destination only for well-prepared, adventurous travelers, and any visit needs local arrangements, permits and time. The climate is wet and cool in the highlands, with heavy rain through much of the year.
