Mauke is a small island in the southern Cook Islands, in the South Pacific, one of the quiet and rarely visited islands of the group, lying to the east of the main island of Rarotonga. Like its neighbours Atiu and Mitiaro, Mauke is a raised coral island, ringed by a band of ancient uplifted reef known as makatea, with a fertile centre of gardens and forest and a coast of coral caves and pools. The island is known for its flowers, its fine woven crafts, its distinctive twin-sided church, and its peaceful, traditional way of life, with a warm welcome for the few travelers who come. It offers caves, snorkelling and an authentic, off-the-beaten-track island experience. Mauke is reached by small aircraft on flights from Rarotonga. The climate is warm and tropical, with a wetter, cyclone-risk season around the start of the year.
