Atiu is a small island in the southern Cook Islands, in the South Pacific, one of the quieter and more unusual islands of the group, lying to the northeast of the main island of Rarotonga. Atiu is a raised coral island, ringed by a band of ancient uplifted reef known as makatea, honeycombed with limestone caves, some containing burial sites and nesting kopeka birds, which travelers can explore with local guides. The island is covered in lush vegetation and grows taro and coffee, and it is known for its distinctive tumunu, a traditional bush-beer drinking gathering. With few visitors, small guesthouses and a strong sense of local culture, Atiu offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-track island experience. It is reached by small aircraft on flights from Rarotonga. The climate is warm and tropical, with a wetter, cyclone-risk season around the start of the year.
