North of the main island of Rarotonga, Aitutaki is a mix of a hilly main island and a great triangular lagoon of dazzling turquoise water, fringed by small, uninhabited coral islets known as motu, with powder-white sand. The lagoon is the island's glory, explored on boat cruises to spots like the famous One Foot Island, for snorkelling, swimming and simply drinking in the scenery. Beyond the lagoon, Aitutaki is a quiet, friendly island of villages, churches and a relaxed pace. It is reached by short flights from Rarotonga, which is served by international flights, with the hop over to Aitutaki taking under an hour. The climate is warm and tropical, with a wetter, cyclone-risk season around the start of the year.
