Likiep is a coral atoll in the Ratak, or sunrise, chain of the Marshall Islands, in the central Pacific Ocean, a ring of many small islands around a wide lagoon. Likiep is unusual among the Marshall Islands for its distinctive heritage: in the 19th century it was bought by a Portuguese trader and a German trader, who developed it as a copra plantation, and it retains old plantation houses and a mixed island culture that reflects that history. It is a quiet, remote atoll of coconut groves, beaches and reef, with a small population living traditionally by fishing and copra, and even a history of boat-building. Likiep is not a resort destination but an authentic, little-visited outer island. It is reached by infrequent small aircraft and by boat from the capital, Majuro, so a visit needs planning. The climate is tropical, warm year-round, and the atoll is very low-lying.
