Wotje is a remote coral atoll in the Ratak, or sunrise, chain of the Marshall Islands, in the central Pacific Ocean. It is a ring of low islets around a wide lagoon, with white beaches, palms and clear water, home to a small population living largely by fishing and copra. Wotje has a notable history: it was developed as a Japanese base before and during the Second World War, and was heavily bombed by American forces, with wartime relics still found on the islands. This is a very remote, traditional place with limited services and little formal tourism; it is not a resort destination. For most travelers the Marshall Islands are experienced mainly around the capital, Majuro. Wotje is reached by infrequent domestic flights and by boat from Majuro, so any visit needs planning and local arrangements. The climate is tropical, warm year-round, with a wetter season and a risk of storms.
