Gabala answers a question many travelers do not expect to ask about Azerbaijan: where can I find real mountains, forest and skiing in the Caucasus? The town itself has real historical depth as well: Gabala was once known as Qabala, a capital of the ancient kingdom of Caucasian Albania, and archaeological remains from that era sit near the modern town, giving visitors with an interest in history a genuine reason to linger beyond the resort facilities. Gabala has its own regional airport handling domestic flights and a limited schedule of international routes, though Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, remains the country's main international gateway, and many visitors combine a flight into Baku with a road transfer of a few hours into Gabala rather than relying on the smaller airport alone. Getting around Gabala and the surrounding resort area typically means a rental car, arranged transfer or resort shuttle, since the sights spread across a wider mountain and forest area than a single walkable district. Seasonally, winter brings the ski season to Tufandag, running roughly from December through March depending on snowfall, while late spring through early autumn offers milder temperatures better suited to hiking, the lakes and the historical sites, making Gabala a rare Azerbaijani destination with a genuine draw in more than one season.
