Ganja is the second-largest city of Azerbaijan, in the west of the country in the Caucasus, an ancient city with a long and rich history. It was the birthplace of the great 12th-century Persian-language poet Nizami Ganjavi, whose grand mausoleum stands just outside the city and is a place of pilgrimage. Ganja's centre has handsome squares and historic buildings, including the Juma Mosque and old caravanserais from the days of the Silk Road, and the curious Bottle House, a dwelling covered in thousands of glass bottles. The city is a gateway to the scenic west of Azerbaijan, including the mountain lake of Goygol nearby. Ganja is reached by its own airport, with flights from Baku and abroad, and by road and rail across the country. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cool winters.
