Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, is a remote coral atoll in the northern Line Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific - and, by land area, one of the largest atolls in the world. Not to be confused with Australia's Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, this Kiritimati is a flat, sun-baked ring of coral and lagoons famous above all as one of the planet's premier saltwater fly-fishing destinations, drawing anglers for its vast flats of bonefish, giant trevally and triggerfish. Beyond fishing, it is known for spectacular seabird colonies and its role in Cold War-era nuclear testing history. This is a genuinely isolated place with limited infrastructure, reached by the occasional flight from Honolulu or Fiji, where trips - especially fishing trips - are arranged in advance through the island's lodges.
