Maiana is a coral atoll in the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific, lying just south of Tarawa, the country's capital and main island. Like other atolls in Kiribati, it is a narrow ring of low, palm-covered islets around a lagoon, barely above sea level, home to a small population living traditionally by fishing, gathering and growing coconuts and breadfruit. Maiana is quiet and rural, without resorts or significant tourism, offering a glimpse of traditional island life, with white beaches, reef and lagoon.
