Maiana is a coral atoll in the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific, lying just south of Tarawa, the country's capital and main island. Like other atolls in Kiribati, it is a narrow ring of low, palm-covered islets around a lagoon, barely above sea level, home to a small population living traditionally by fishing, gathering and growing coconuts and breadfruit. Maiana is quiet and rural, without resorts or significant tourism, offering a glimpse of traditional island life, with white beaches, reef and lagoon. Its closeness to Tarawa makes it a little more accessible than the more distant atolls. Maiana is reached by small aircraft on infrequent domestic flights and by boat from Tarawa, so any visit needs planning and local arrangements. The climate is tropical, hot and humid year-round, and like all of Kiribati the atoll is very low-lying and vulnerable to the sea.
