Tabiteuea South is the southern part of Tabiteuea, one of the largest atolls in the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean. Tabiteuea is a long, thin chain of low coral islets stretching around a wide lagoon, and its southern district is a remote, traditional area home to a small population living by fishing and coconut cultivation. This is a very isolated part of Kiribati, without resorts or real tourism, known for its strongly traditional culture and its history of fierce independence, along with white beaches, reef and lagoon. Tabiteuea South is reached only with difficulty, by infrequent small aircraft and by inter-island boat from the capital, Tarawa, so any visit needs careful planning and local arrangements. The climate is tropical, hot and humid year-round, and the atoll is very low-lying and vulnerable to the rising sea.
