Kanton (also spelled Canton, and formerly known by several other names) is a remote coral atoll in the Phoenix Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific roughly halfway between Hawaii and Fiji. It is the largest and, in recent years, the only inhabited island of the Phoenix group, with just a tiny population around its lagoon. The atoll has a storied past: its mid-ocean position made it a strategic stop for trans-Pacific flying boats in the 1930s and a base during and after the Second World War, and today it lies within the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA), one of the world's largest marine protected areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its pristine reefs and marine life.
