Yule Island is a small island off the south coast of Papua New Guinea, in the Central Province, in the Coral Sea to the northwest of the capital, Port Moresby. It is a low, green island close to the mainland coast, near the town of Bereina, home to the Roro people, and holds a special place in the country's history as one of the earliest centres of Christianity in Papua New Guinea. It was here, in 1885, that Catholic missionaries of the Sacred Heart established their first mission in the region, and the island became an important base for the spread of the faith and for early contact along this coast. Today Yule Island is a quiet place of villages, coast and history rather than a developed tourist destination. It is reached by boat from the nearby mainland and by road from Port Moresby to the coast. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with a wetter season.
