Tapini is a small, remote settlement in the mountains of the Goilala district in Central Province, Papua New Guinea, in the rugged interior north of the capital, Port Moresby. Set among steep forested ranges and deep valleys, it is a former mission station and local centre for a scattered mountain population, reached historically by a grass airstrip that has long been a lifeline for the district. This is a very isolated, traditional area with minimal services and no real tourism, of interest mainly for its remote mountain setting and cultures rather than as a destination in itself. There are no easy roads; access is chiefly by light aircraft to the airstrip, weather permitting, and by long, difficult overland tracks. Any visit needs local arrangements, time and flexibility. The climate is cool and wet in the highlands, with heavy rainfall through much of the year.
