Xai-Xai is a coastal city in southern Mozambique, the capital of Gaza Province, on the Indian Ocean near the mouth of the Limpopo River. It is one of the more accessible beach destinations in the south of the country, popular especially with visitors from South Africa and with Mozambicans. The main town sits a little inland, while the beach, Praia do Xai-Xai, lies a few kilometres away, a long stretch of sand protected by a coral reef that creates calm lagoons for swimming and snorkelling. A well-known local sight is the Wenela tidal pool, a natural blowhole and pool in the reef. The area offers diving, fishing and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Xai-Xai lies on the main national road north of the capital, Maputo, about 200 kilometres away, and is reached by road and by regional transport. The climate is warm and tropical, with a hotter, wetter season around the start of the year.
