TGS is the airport code for Chokwe, a town in Gaza Province in southern Mozambique, in the valley of the Limpopo River. Chokwe is one of the country's main agricultural centres, at the heart of a large irrigation scheme for rice and other crops, sometimes called the granary of the south. It sits on the flat Limpopo plain inland from the coast, a working Mozambican town rather than a tourist resort, and has at times been badly affected by flooding of the Limpopo. The wider Gaza Province stretches north toward the Limpopo National Park, part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park that links Mozambique with South Africa's Kruger and reserves in Zimbabwe. Chokwe is reached mainly by road from the capital, Maputo, a few hours to the south, and from the provincial city of Xai-Xai on the coast. The climate is hot and tropical, with a wet season roughly from November to March.
