Kaben is a small, remote community on Maloelap Atoll, in the Ratak chain of the Marshall Islands, in the central Pacific Ocean. Like other Marshallese atolls, Maloelap is a ring of low, palm-covered coral islets around a wide lagoon, home to a small population living by fishing and copra, with white beaches and clear water. Maloelap has a notable history: it was a fortified Japanese base in the Second World War, heavily bombed by American forces, and rusting guns, wrecks and other relics still lie among the islets and in the lagoon, drawing occasional divers. This is a very remote, traditional place with minimal services and little formal tourism. It is reached by infrequent domestic flights and by boat from the capital, Majuro, so any visit needs planning and local arrangements. The climate is tropical, warm year-round, with a wetter season and a risk of storms.
