Welkom is a city in the Free State province in the interior of South Africa, at the heart of the goldfields of the Lejweleputswa region. It grew rapidly from the late 1940s as a planned mining town, laid out with wide roads, roundabouts and green spaces to serve the gold mines that made this one of South Africa's richest gold-producing areas. Its name means welcome in Afrikaans and Dutch. Welkom is a working city rather than a tourist resort, but the surrounding grassland and pans, or seasonal lakes, are known for birdlife, including flamingos that gather on the wetlands. The wider Free State is a region of open farmland and big skies. Welkom lies on the main routes between Johannesburg, a few hours to the north, and Bloemfontein, and is reached by road and by a small airport. The climate is dry, with warm, thundery summers and cold, sunny winters with frosty nights.
