Klerksdorp is a city in the North West province of South Africa, on the highveld to the southwest of Johannesburg, set on the Schoonspruit near its meeting with the Vaal river. It is one of the oldest towns in the old Transvaal, founded by Boer settlers in the 1830s, and it grew into an important centre after gold was discovered in the surrounding Klerksdorp goldfields in the 1880s. Today it remains a busy mining and farming city, at the heart of a rich gold-mining district and a productive agricultural region of maize and sunflowers. It is a regional commercial hub rather than a tourist resort. Klerksdorp is reached by road from Johannesburg, about a hundred and thirty kilometres to the northeast; the nearest airport with scheduled flights is O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The climate is dry and sunny, with warm summers, cold winters and summer thunderstorms.
