Weipa is a town on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, Australia, on Albatross Bay where rivers meet the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is a modern town built around one of the world's largest bauxite mines, the aluminium ore that gives the area its distinctive red cliffs and soils. For visitors, Weipa is best known as a superb fishing destination, famous for barramundi and other sport fish in its rivers and coastal waters, and as a remote-travel base in the tropical savanna and wetlands of western Cape York. The area is the traditional country of Aboriginal peoples, with communities such as Napranum nearby. Weipa is reached by a long drive on unsealed roads across Cape York, generally in the dry season, and by regular flights to its airport from Cairns. The climate is tropical, with a hot, wet summer and a warm, dry winter that is the main visiting season.
