Aurukun is a remote Aboriginal community on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, Australia, on the Archer River near the Gulf of Carpentaria. Home to around 1,100 people, the great majority Wik and Wik-Waya Traditional Owners, it is one of the oldest mission-founded communities in the region and a centre of Wik culture, art and language. This is not a conventional tourist destination: much of the surrounding country is Aboriginal land where visitors need permission from Traditional Owners to travel, and access to the town and beyond is controlled. Travellers with a genuine reason to visit - work, cultural or community connections - should arrange permits and logistics in advance through the Aurukun Shire Council. The tropical climate has a distinct wet season (roughly November to April) when road access is often cut, leaving light aircraft as the link.
