Walvis Bay is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Namibia, set on a large natural lagoon where the desert meets the sea. It is the country's main harbour and, for visitors, a gateway to some of Namibia's most striking coastal scenery and wildlife. The Walvis Bay lagoon is a wetland of international importance, famous for huge flocks of flamingos, pelicans and other birds, while boat trips out to Pelican Point and the bay bring close encounters with seals, dolphins and sometimes whales. To the south lies Sandwich Harbour, a dramatic spot where towering dunes drop straight into the ocean, reached by 4x4 across the sand. Just up the coast is the resort town of Swakopmund. Walvis Bay is reached by road across the desert from the interior and by its airport, and the climate is mild and often foggy, cooled by the cold Atlantic current.
