UEL is the airport code for Quelimane Airport, serving the port city of Quelimane, the capital of Zambezia Province on the coast of central Mozambique. Quelimane sits on the Bons Sinais River, a little inland from the Indian Ocean, in a low, green, humid region famous for its vast coconut plantations, once among the largest in the world. Historically a Swahili and later Portuguese trading town, linked to the trade routes and to explorers of the Zambezi, it retains a faded colonial character. It is not a major tourist resort but serves as the gateway to Zambezia, one of Mozambique's most populous provinces, with its farmland, rivers and long stretches of little-developed coast. The Zambezi delta lies to the south. Quelimane is reached by flights from Maputo and other cities to its airport and by road. The climate is hot and humid, with a pronounced wet season.
