Luabo is a small, remote town in the Zambezi River delta of Zambezia Province in central Mozambique, close to where the great river meets the Indian Ocean. It is best known historically as one of the sites of the Sena Sugar Estates, a large colonial-era enterprise that from the 1920s made this stretch of the lower Zambezi a major sugar-producing region, with plantations, a factory and river transport. Mozambique's long civil war disrupted the area in the 1980s, and it remains a quiet, out-of-the-way place today, set among the wetlands, channels and farmland of the delta. This is a rural, little-visited corner of the country rather than an established tourist destination. Access is difficult, mainly by road and river across the delta from larger centres in Zambezia and Sofala. The climate is hot and humid, with a wet season from around November to April.
