Tortola is the largest and most populous of the British Virgin Islands, a lush, mountainous island in the eastern Caribbean, and home to Road Town, the territory's capital. Above all Tortola is one of the great sailing centres of the world: with steady trade winds, sheltered waters and dozens of nearby islands and cays, it is a favourite base for yacht charters and island-hopping through the British Virgin Islands. The island itself has beautiful beaches, above all the wide sweep of Cane Garden Bay on the north coast, and rises to the rainforest heights of Sage Mountain, the highest point in the Virgin Islands. Road Town is a relaxed harbour capital and the hub of the islands. Tortola is reached by air through the airport on neighbouring Beef Island, joined by a bridge, and by ferry. The climate is warm and tropical, cooled by the trade winds, with a wetter season later in the year.
