Terapo is a small coastal settlement and mission in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea, on the low, wet southern coast facing the Gulf of Papua, in a region of rivers, delta lands and rainforest. It lies in a remote part of the country, in an area of villages and coconut palms near the great river systems that drain into the gulf, and is known as an old mission station. Terapo is a modest local centre rather than a tourist destination, in one of the least-visited and hardest-to-reach provinces of Papua New Guinea, where travel is often by small aircraft and by canoe and boat along the coast and rivers. The wider Gulf Province is known for its rivers, its traditional cultures and its dramatic wetland landscapes. Terapo is reached by light aircraft to its airstrip and by boat along the coast. The climate is hot, humid and very wet, with heavy rainfall.
