Malalaua is a small settlement in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea, on the country's south coast, in the low, wet country near the delta lands where great rivers meet the Gulf of Papua. It lies inland of the coast on the road that runs between the Gulf region and the capital, Port Moresby, in an area of villages, rivers, swamp forest and coconut palms. Malalaua is a modest local centre for the surrounding communities rather than a tourist destination, in a remote and little-visited part of Papua New Guinea. The wider Gulf Province is known for its rivers, its traditional cultures and its dramatic river-delta landscapes. Malalaua is reached mainly by road from Port Moresby, a long journey along the Hiritano Highway, and by light aircraft and boat, so any visit needs local arrangements. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with very heavy rainfall and a pronounced wet season.
