Star Harbour, also known as Namuga, is a remote natural harbour and group of villages at the eastern end of Makira Island, formerly called San Cristobal, in the Makira-Ulawa Province of the Solomon Islands. This is one of the more isolated corners of a country already off the main tourist trail, a place of dense jungle, coastal villages and traditional life in the far southeast of the archipelago. It holds a small place in history as the spot, at Namuga, where Queen Elizabeth II is remembered as first setting foot on Solomon Islands soil, and an early Marist mission once operated here. Reaching Star Harbour is difficult: it is a long, exposed boat journey of several hours from Kirakira, the provincial capital, or from Santa Ana. Any visit needs local arrangements, time and flexibility. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall.
