SKH is the airport code for Surkhet, whose main town is Birendranagar, the capital of Karnali Province in western Nepal and often called the gateway to Karnali. Set in a broad valley about 600 kilometres west of Kathmandu, it is one of Nepal's few master-planned towns and serves as the administrative and transport hub for a vast, mountainous and remote province. Nearby attractions include Bulbule Lake, a spring-fed lake in a recreation park in the town, named for the bubbles rising from underground springs, and Kakrebihar, the hillside remains of a twelfth-century Buddhist temple and monastery that is a national heritage site. Surkhet is a staging point for travel deeper into the Karnali region. It is reached by domestic flights to its airport and by long mountain roads. The climate ranges from warm in the valley to cool in the surrounding hills.
