Rukumkot is a remote town in the mountains of western Nepal, the headquarters of the Eastern Rukum District in Karnali Province. It sits in a scenic, little-visited region beneath the Sisne Himal, a snow peak of around 5,800 metres that is the westernmost summit of the Dhaulagiri massif and dominates the skyline on clear days. The area is emerging as an off-the-beaten-track trekking destination, with attractions such as the tranquil Gupta Daha lake in the lap of Sisne, other high lakes, caves and viewpoints, and the traditional culture of Magar, Gurung and other communities. The region also carries the memory of Nepal's civil conflict of 1996 to 2006. Rukumkot is reached overland on long mountain roads, with the nearest airports elsewhere in the region, so any visit needs time and planning. The climate ranges from warm valleys to cold high country.
