Skeldon is a town in the far east of coastal Guyana, in the East Berbice-Corentyne region, on the estuary of the Corentyne River that forms the border with Suriname. Together with neighbouring Springlands it forms the town of Corriverton, and it is the main crossing point between the two countries, with a ferry running from nearby Moleson Creek to Suriname. Skeldon's economy has long been built on sugar: it is home to one of Guyana's largest sugar estates and a modern processing factory, and much of its population descends from the East Indian indentured labourers who came to work the plantations. This is a working coastal town rather than a tourist resort, of interest for its border-town character and sugar heritage. Skeldon is reached by road along the Guyanese coast from Georgetown, several hours to the west. The climate is hot and humid, with wet seasons through the year.
