Bartica is a river town in western Guyana, on the west bank of the Essequibo River at its confluence with the Mazaruni and Cuyuni rivers, and the regional capital of Cuyuni-Mazaruni (Region 7). Long known as the Gateway to the Interior, it is the launching point for the goldfields, diamond diggings and logging camps of Guyana's vast forested interior, and a lively, frontier-flavoured town where river transport rules. For travellers it is the jumping-off point for river journeys into the rainforest - to spots such as the Marshall Falls and up the Mazaruni - and a stop on the way toward the wider Essequibo region. Reached by boat or road-and-ferry from Georgetown, Bartica is hot and humid year-round; Guyana's drier seasons, roughly February to April and August to November, make river travel easier.
