Setif is a city in the northeast of Algeria, in North Africa, set high on the great plateau of the interior at around 1,100 metres above sea level, in cool, fertile grain country. It is an ancient place, founded by the Romans as Sitifis in the first century and once the capital of a Roman province, and it keeps its links with that past in its museums and ruins. The region is known as one of the granaries of the country, a land of wheat and grain, and Setif is a busy modern city of markets and industry. Its best-loved landmark is the Ain El Fouara fountain in the centre of town, while just outside the province lies Djemila, one of the finest sets of Roman ruins in the world and a World Heritage site. Setif is reached by air into its airport, and by road and rail across the high plateau. The climate is a highland one, with hot, dry summers and cold winters that can bring snow.
