Bejaia is a Mediterranean port city on the Gulf of Bejaia in northern Algeria, the largest city of Kabylie and capital of its province, spectacularly set where the Djurdjura and coastal mountains meet the sea. Backed by the peak of Yemma Gouraya, it combines a working harbour and old town with some of Algeria's most scenic coastline, at the heart of a Berber (Amazigh) region rich in culture and history. Its highlights cluster in and around Gouraya National Park - the Yemma Gouraya summit and its fort, the Cap Carbon lighthouse on a dramatic headland, the Pic des Singes (Monkey Peak) with its Barbary macaques, and coves and beaches along the cliffs - while the Soummam valley opens the interior. Bejaia has an airport and road links along the coast; the warm, dry Mediterranean summer (roughly June to September) is the main season, with mild green springs and autumns.
