Sana'a is the capital and largest city of Yemen, high in the mountains of the southern Arabian Peninsula. Travelers must be aware, however, that Yemen is rated Do Not Travel by the United States and other governments because of an ongoing armed conflict, terrorism, kidnapping and a severe humanitarian crisis, with the capital under contested control. This page is informational only and does not encourage travel; reaching Sana'a is in practice extremely difficult, as visas are rarely granted and services are minimal. Historically, Sana'a is renowned for its remarkable Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of tall mudbrick tower houses decorated with white tracery and stained-glass windows. Anyone considering the region must rely on their own government's current advice. The mountain climate is mild, but the security situation, not the weather, is the decisive factor.
