Dhamar is a historic city in the highlands of Yemen, about a hundred kilometres south of the capital, Sanaa, high on a plateau at around 2,400 metres. It is an ancient place, its name reaching back to the kings of old Yemen, and was long an important centre of Arab and Islamic learning, with a great mosque of early origin. The surrounding highlands are a land of terraced fields, mountains and old towns, a historic heartland of the country. However, Yemen has been devastated by prolonged conflict and a severe humanitarian crisis, and the security situation is extremely dangerous; governments strongly advise against all travel to the country. It is essential to rely on current official advice, which will warn against any travel. Dhamar is reached by road through the highlands, though travel is unsafe. The climate is mild and temperate thanks to the altitude, cooler than the coast.
