Saidor is a small coastal settlement on the north coast of Madang Province in Papua New Guinea, on the Rai Coast beneath the steep Finisterre mountain range. It is a remote district centre rather than a tourist destination, set where the mountains meet the Bismarck Sea, in an area of villages, rainforest, reef and dramatic scenery. Saidor has a place in history as the site of an Allied landing during the Second World War, when an airstrip was established here during the New Guinea campaign, and wartime traces remain in the area. Today it is a quiet, out-of-the-way place with minimal services, of interest for its coastal and mountain setting and traditional cultures. Saidor is reached mainly by small aircraft to its airstrip and by boat along the coast, with very limited road access. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall for much of the year.
