Dumpu is a small village in the upper Ramu valley, in the Madang province of Papua New Guinea, in the great lowland valley that runs between high mountain ranges in the north of the New Guinea mainland. The Ramu valley, with the neighbouring Markham valley, forms one of the major inland corridors of the country, a broad landscape of grassland, forest and river, framed by mountains on either side. Dumpu is a modest rural community, one of the scattered settlements of the valley, and is remembered for its wartime airfield, which played a part in the campaigns fought across the Markham and Ramu valleys during the Second World War. Today it is a quiet farming place, far from the towns. Dumpu is reached by road up the Ramu valley and by light aircraft. The climate is warm and humid, tropical, with a wetter and a drier season through the year.
