Amboin is a small village in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea, set on the Karawari River, a tributary of the great Sepik River system in the country's remote north. It is best known in travel terms as the site of an airstrip and lodge serving the Karawari region, one of the classic gateways to the Sepik - a vast river world famous for its haus tambaran spirit houses, elaborate wood carving, and living traditional cultures little changed by the outside world. Amboin itself is a tiny settlement; its significance is as an access point for river journeys and cultural visits into one of the most culturally rich and least-developed regions of the Pacific. The drier months, broadly May to October, are generally more favourable for river travel, though the Sepik lowlands are wet year-round.
