Amanab is a small, remote town in the Upper Sepik area of Sandaun Province, also known as West Sepik, in the far northwest of Papua New Guinea, close to the border with the Indonesian region of Papua. It sits in rugged, forested hill country, part of the great watershed of the Sepik, one of the largest and wildest river systems in the world. This is one of the more isolated corners of Papua New Guinea, a land of dense rainforest, scattered villages and many different languages and clans, far from the main towns and roads. Amanab serves as a small local centre and mission station for a wide stretch of the surrounding bush. Because there are few roads in this part of the country, it is reached mainly by light aircraft, landing at its airstrip, with the provincial capital, Vanimo, lying on the coast to the north. The climate is warm, wet and tropical throughout the year.
