Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, set inland in a broad plain where the Moraca and Ribnica rivers meet, ringed by mountains in the south of the Balkans. It is the country's administrative and commercial centre rather than a major tourist attraction in itself, a mostly modern city rebuilt after heavy damage in the Second World War, with a small Ottoman-era old quarter, the Stara Varos, its clock tower and mosque, beside the river. Landmarks include the striking Millennium Bridge and the modern Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. For most visitors, Podgorica is a gateway to the rest of Montenegro, within easy reach of Lake Skadar, the Adriatic coast around Kotor and Budva, and the northern mountains. It is served by Podgorica Airport and by road and rail links across the region. Summers are hot and dry, winters cool and wetter.
