PKM is the airport code for the airstrip at Port Kaituma, a small, remote town in the northwest of Guyana, in the Barima-Waini region, on the banks of the Kaituma river deep in the rainforest interior. It lies around 230 kilometres northwest of the capital, Georgetown, in a low country of dense tropical forest, rivers and mangrove swamp, far from the coast and the main towns. Port Kaituma grew up as a river port and mining centre, serving the gold, diamond and manganese workings of the surrounding region, and remains a hub for the miners, loggers and farmers of this wild corner of the country. Port Kaituma is reached by small aircraft into its airstrip, on short flights from Georgetown, and by river, so any journey here needs planning. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with very heavy rainfall for much of the year.
