Matthews Ridge is a small, remote settlement in the Barima-Waini region, or Region One, in the northwestern interior of Guyana, not far from the Venezuelan border. It grew around manganese, with a large mine operated here by Union Carbide in the 1960s, and mining has periodically returned to the area since. To ship the ore, the nearby river port of Port Kaituma was developed and linked to the ridge by a narrow-gauge railway. This is deep rainforest and savanna country, sparsely populated and far from Guyana's coastal towns. There is little conventional tourism; the area is defined by its mining history, its rivers and its forest. Matthews Ridge is reached mainly by small aircraft to its airstrip, or by a long river and coastal journey from the capital, Georgetown. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rains for much of the year.
